The Photography Farm: Farm Week workshop, Brooke Davis family photography

Feb 3, 2014

angela ward brown family photography workshop_0033   Afternoon all!  I hope you are all imbued with Monday vim & vigor (That’s a thing, right?).  I was up bright and not-very-early buzzing with ideas after my visit to the Photography Farm yesterday.  There are more photography workshops than stars in the galaxy, and I generally skirt them, but what Lisa Devlin‘s Photography Farm does so well is invite speakers from home & abroad that are that little bit different, and  that often tap into the workshop less travelled.

I have been considering dropping family shoots from my portfolio for a while now; my wedding practice involves few posed formal group shots because largely they don’t make sense to me, and so it feels odd to be doing pretty much nothing but that for family shoots.  I had been musing on what I wanted from a family session as a parent; I don’t want magazine-style shiny images of people sat in sunny grass in matching outfits (not least because this would never happen with my brood), rather I would love someone to capture us as we are right now in all our flawed, shouty, and chaotic beauty.  I want something that in 20 years hits me in the chest and transports me back to what it was like to have a seven year old and a ten year old and two nutty terriers, none of whom follow any of Jamie’s & my instructions. Our buddy Susan Sabo came over from the US to visit last year, and she took some shots for us that will do just that, and as a result they are treasured.

So when I saw US photographer Brooke Davis of BlushbyB Photography was headed to the farm I signed right up; I wanted to see how she approached these commissions & see if I could learn anything from that.  Firstly, check out Brooke’s work, its breathtaking, go HERE.   Brooke is a firecracker – talented, engaging, beautiful, and refreshingly free of guff. I have a small crush on her.  And as she took us through her way of working, approach to clients, and her mission statement – well, it just made sense in every way that my previous way of working (however fun it was at times) didn’t.

So anyway, yes, big changes afoot which I will share with you once I have got them straight in my head and done some experimenting with a few lucky families. But here are a few images I shot yesterday, and thanks so much to Lisa for ringleading the circus (and for lending us her lovely girls, along with the Brandrett family) & Brooke for her inspiration, honesty and sharing.

NB: Please note that these are workshop images, so whilst they were all taken by me, sometimes the subjects were posed by someone else.  Updates about the Photography Farm & its activities can be found here:  https://www.facebook.com/photographyfarm
