Sam & Katie’s Monks Barn, Hurley wedding
Every wedding has it’s story. I am always banging on about this, but that’s because it’s true. Sometimes it’s about a family dynamic, about a physical space, beautiful decor, even the rain; but it is also always, at its heart, about two people in love. And Katie & Sam’s day today was just that – a story of two people who met age 15, and who fell irrevocably & irretrievably in love, where they remain. There was no way to listen to today’s speeches (be it from a father, a husband, a wife, a friend) and not be moved to tears – I certainly shed a few. But everyone essentially wove different threads of the same tale – this wonderful couple’s love story. And below is my own contribution to that tapestry.
Thanks so much to My Pie for the incredible chicken pie today (NOM!), to Lily & Liz for the amazing flowers, to Heerden & Black for keeping us well entertaining wit good humour & even better music, and to Mission Burrito for the most amazing, well, burritos. At the end of the post I will include the beautiful Roy Croft poem that Katie read in her speech (yes! More women speaking please!). It’s wonderful. But mainly thank you to Katie & Sam for their trust, their hospitality, and their lovely hearts.
Love. By Roy Croft
I love you,
Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.
I love you,
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are making of me.
I love you
For the part of me
That you bring out;
I love you
For putting your hand
Into my heaped-up heart
And passing over
All the foolish, weak things
That you can’t help
Dimly seeing there,
And for drawing out
Into the light
All the beautiful belongings
That no one else had looked
Quite far enough to find.
I love you because you
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple;
Out of the works
Of my every day
Not a reproach
But a song.
I love you
Because you have done
More than any creed
Could have done
To make me good,
And more than any fate
To make me happy.
You have done it
Without a touch,
Without a word,
Without a sign.
You have done it
By being yourself.
